Do you know the meaning of the word "sierra?" While the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is a prime example of how the name is used today, sierra is more than the name for a truck. It's a Spanish word that describes a jagged mountain range. So, how did it end up in the GMC lineup?

GMC adopted the word in the 1970s as the name for its top-tier trims of the C/K truck. Through the ensuing decade, every trim in the C/K and Yukon lineups used the Sierra name in some way. There was only one problem, however. The C/K truck was outdated, and the Sierra trim had done everything it could do to breathe new life into the once-popular truck. It was time for an upgrade, and GMC knew it.

Rather than starting from scratch, GMC took the most popular features of the C/K truck and built a new truck on the same platform. The all-new GMC Sierra made its debut in 1988 and marked the first modern truck from GMC. It was laden with features, conveniences, and luxuries, but it was also exceptionally capable, and this made it more attractive to drivers looking for the best of both worlds. Fast forward two decades, and we continue to see this in the 2022 Sierra 1500, which GMC promises is the most luxurious, advanced, and capable Sierra 1500 ever made.

  • Power

GMC knows that a truck like the Sierra 1500 will be pushed to its limits, and that's why the automaker continues to deliver exceptional power and capability across its multi-engine lineup. For 2022, GMC gives you four powertrain choices for the Sierra 1500, allowing you to customize the truck to your needs. The lineup starts with a new 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine that's mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission to deliver improved handling, performance, towing capability, and on-demand power, giving you the confidence you need to get from Point A to Point B. The numbers don't lie with the engine churning out 310 horsepower, 420 lb-ft of torque, and a maximum trailering capacity of 9,400 pounds.

    Larger and More Powerful Engines

Next in the Sierra 1500's powertrain lineup is GMC's proven 5.3-liter EcoTec 3 V8 engine with dynamic fuel management. Paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission, this combination delivers slightly more horsepower at 355 horses but less torque at 383 lb-ft. Even with the lower torque rating, the engine makes the Sierra 1500 a capable hauler, but you'll find it truly shines when you're looking for speed and quick acceleration.

GMC's 6.2-liter EcoTec 3 V8 engine delivers both speed and capability. Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, this powerhouse delivers 420 horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. This gives you the power and capability you need whether you're towing a heavy load or running errands in town. Of course, the Sierra 1500's powertrain lineup wouldn't be complete without a diesel option. GMC made several updates to the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel for 2022. The engine now delivers class-leading 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It's also responsible for the Sierra's best-in-class light-duty diesel 4WD towing rating of 13,000 pounds as well as its maximum towing rating of 13,200 pounds, both of which make the Sierra 1500 an exceptional workhorse.

    Off-Road Performance Features

Aside from the Sierra's powertrains and towing capability, GMC extends the best-selling truck's versatility by making it a capable off-road warrior with the all-new AT4X trim. The trim prepares the Sierra 1500 for the trail by equipping it with advanced off-road components like its off-road-specific chassis and suspension calibrations, its large steel transfer case shield, and its exclusive Multimatic DSSV dampers that increase its agility and maneuverability. It's also the only truck in the class to come equipped with front and rear e-locking differentials. Add in tools like Terrain Mode with one-pedal rock crawling, and the AT4X makes the 2022 Sierra a workhorse both on and off the pavement.

  • Function

The 2022 Sierra 1500 isn't designed to sit on the sidelines; it's ready to work with you to get the job done. To do this, GMC equips the Sierra 1500 with a suite of functional features that add to its versatility. These features start with the truck's cornerstep rear bumper that features oversized footwells with an anti-slip texture that makes it easy for you to access the cargo bed. But what about the bed itself?

    The Exclusive CarbonPro Bed

GMC gives you two choices: a traditional steel bed or a revolutionary carbon-fiber composite bed. The steel cargo bed offers the most volume of any competitor with up to 89.1 cubic feet of room. It is also equipped with 12 standard cargo tie-downs that can support up to 500 pounds in each corner. Outfitted with rear and side LED lights, the bed is versatile and durable. You can even add a 120-volt electric outlet that can run power tools, charge electronics, and more.

The carbon-fiber composite bed is ideal if you're looking for a bed that will stand up to dents, dings, and scratches since carbon fiber naturally withstands weathering, corrosion, and excessive wear and tear. It's also lighter and shaves off nearly 100 pounds from the truck's overall weight. You'll find the bed even comes with two additional tie-downs for a total of 14.

    The Original Multi-Function Tailgate

Knowing that life is a balance of work and play, GMC makes it easier to manage both with innovative features like the MultiPro Tailgate and the available MultiPro Audio System by Kicker. The MultiPro tailgate is remarkable because it extends the versatility of the tailgate by offering several unique functions that make it easier to access the bed and load or unload cargo. The tailgate offers an additional step, a flat work surface, and several load stops to prevent items from falling out of the bed. The MultiPro Audio System makes your time in the truck more enjoyable by equipping the tailgate with a 100-watt exterior audio system with Bluetooth streaming capability. This means you can listen to music at a job site or get the party going during your weekend campout with friends.

  • Technology

A close up shows the infotainment screen in a 2022 GMC 1500 Sierra AT4-X.

GMC promises that the 2022 Sierra 1500 is the most luxurious, advanced, and capable half-ton truck ever made. The automaker keeps that promise with its exceptional powertrain lineup that extends its capability, but what about the Sierra's technology? It's safe to say that the 2022 Sierra 1500 is a haven of innovation.

    Updated Infotainment Technology

For 2022, the Sierra 1500 offers an all-new 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster that gives you all the information you need in a crisp display behind the steering wheel. To keep your focus on the road, GMC gives you the option to add a 15-inch multicolor head-up display to the Sierra, which puts the data you need in front of you on the windshield. You'll also find the massive new 13.4-inch color touchscreen display in the center dashboard is a hotbed of information, completing the Sierra's 40+ inches of display area and giving you access to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, navigation, and a WiFi hotspot.

    Advanced Trailering Features

While the Sierra 1500 makes sure you have all the data you need, you'll find it also extends your visibility around the truck. Its eight-camera system offers the best visibility in the segment, with 15 unique camera views around the truck and trailer. These views make it easier to hitch and unhitch from a trailer and give you the confidence you need when you're towing a heavy load. The available rear camera mirror adds to this by giving you a wider and less-obstructed view behind the truck when you're driving down the road.

The Sierra's extensive camera system makes it easy to tow a trailer, but GMC didn't stop there. The available ProGrade Trailering System is a suite of intelligent trailering technology that puts everything you need within view. As a command center for your trailer, the system helps you hitch and unhitch, navigate your pre-ride checklist, monitor tire pressure, create custom trailer profiles, get maintenance reminders, and more via the center touchscreen display or the myGMC mobile app.

    Go Hands-Free With Super Cruise

Beyond trailering and connectivity features, the 2022 Sierra 1500 also offers plenty of innovative safety and driver-assist technology. Super Cruise is the biggest addition to the truck's lineup. It's the first true hands-free driver-assist technology in the industry and works on over 200,000 miles of compatible roads throughout the United States and Canada. Since it also works with a trailer, you can now take your hands off the wheel to reduce driver fatigue on those long stretches of highway, even when you're hauling a heavy load.
