One of the most popular trucks on the road, the Silverado continues to live up to the legacy of Chevy's legendary pickup models that go back decades. The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 has been updated and refreshed with a number of new features and options inside and out. Not only has the front-end been restyled and updated for this model year, but the interior has been nicely refreshed, especially when you look at the LT trims and higher. With this update, Chevy makes one of the best trucks around even better, and they are introducing an all-new ZR2 off-road model to take things even further.
In years past, the Silverado has had one of the largest lineups of engine options, sometimes offering as many as six different engines to choose from. With the 2022 model, this has been simplified a bit, but there are still four fantastic engines available. The standard 2.7L turbo high-output engine is a terrific option, though you can also pick a 5.3L or 6.2L V8 if you want more power and boosted performance. A 3.0L I-6 Turbo Diesel rounds out the lineup and ensures there is really an engine here for everyone, with greater diesel towing than ever before.
Although a big part of this year's update is an exterior refresh that features a bold and stylish new front end, the inside is probably what we are most excited about. The LT and higher trims have received a redesigned interior that includes a more spacious and impressive cabin along with improved functionality. This includes a 13.4-inch infotainment display and a 12-inch configurable digital instrument cluster that both come standard on all of these updated models. Combine these amazing new features with the all-new ZR2 off-road trim, and you can easily see why so many people are excited about this updated 2022 Silverado.
In the past few years, there have been a lot of engines available for the Chevy Silverado - when the latest generation launched for the 2019 model year; there were six different engines to pick from. With the updates this year, however, Chevy has simplified and streamlined their engine lineup. This makes it easier to ensure you get a fantastic engine on the Silverado 1500 while still keeping some options for upgrades if you need more power.
The standard engine on the 2022 Silverado is a 2.7L Turbo High-Output I-4 that delivers 310 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, much more power than the previous iteration of this engine. This comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and offers up to 9,500 lbs of towing capacity when properly equipped. While this engine comes with two-wheel drive standard, four-wheel drive is available - this is true of the entire lineup of engines on the Silverado 1500, though some trims feature four-wheel drive as standard.
If you are interested in a V8 engine, then you have two different options available, starting with a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine that delivers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. For something with more muscle, there is also a 6.2L V8 engine available that provides you with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque for an incredible driving experience in the Silverado. Both of these engines come paired with a 10-speed automatic; when properly equipped, the 5.3L V8 can handle up to 11,200 lbs of maximum towing, while the 6.2L V8 can manage up to 13,300 lbs of towing.
Finally, there is a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine available, which delivers 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Much like the V8 engines, this comes paired with a 10-speed automatic for a smooth and responsive driving experience. If you are a diesel fan, then you will no doubt be excited to learn that the maximum towing capacity of this engine has been boosted by 4,000 lbs from last year: it now offers up to 13,300 lbs of maximum towing, just like the 6.2L V8.
For years now, the Chevy Silverado has been one of the best off-road trucks on the market, especially if you are interested in a full-size pickup to use on the trail. With the 2022 model year, Chevy has gone even further than ever before: the two Trail Boss trims are still available, both of which offer impressive off-road packages and upgrades from standard models. In addition to this, however, a new ZR2 trim is available that takes the Silverado's off-road design and performance to another level entirely.
The great thing about the two Trail Boss options is that they let you choose from the existing trim levels and add great off-road functionality to them. Trims for the Silverado include the Custom, LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country - the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss let you pick either of those trims and enjoy improved off-road functionality. You get the redesigned interior found on the LT and higher trims while also taking advantage of standard four-wheel drive, Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, and an off-road-tuned suspension.
If you want to take the off-road performance of the Silverado even further, however, then you need to check out the all-new ZR2 trim. With the ZR2, you get next-level off-road functionality thanks to Multimatic DSSV dampers and uniquely-tuned springs that offer incredible front and rear suspension travel. The ZR2 also features front and rear e-lockers, as well as an off-road chassis and suspension, plus unique skid plates to protect the underside of the Silverado.
While the Trail Boss trims are both excellent, the ZR2 has some unique features that you cannot find on other models, like Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires. Chevy's designers and engineers have paid attention to every detail, like a bumper with removable end caps for easier replacement in case you have a rough time on the trail, and the dual exhaust is located before the rear bumper to avoid potential damage on rough terrain. The Silverado ZR2 also has Chevy's latest off-road technology, such as their Terrain Mode system. This includes one-pedal functionality while rock crawling, letting you focus on the trail and navigate rocks with ease.
While the exterior refresh of the 2022 Chevy Silverado is gorgeous, the interior has also received a complete redesign for both style and functionality. We should note, however, that not every Silverado model comes with a redesigned interior - the starting WT and Custom trims have not been updated. But if you choose an LT or higher trim, including the off-road-focused ZR2 and the gorgeous High Country, then you will get this redesigned and updated cabin.
Although there are a lot of great updates that will quickly catch your eye, perhaps the most stunning is the 13.4-inch infotainment display that comes standard on every model with the redesigned interior. This is joined by a 12-inch driver information center that also looks amazing - between these two screens; you can easily see all of the information you need at a glance. This driver center includes numerous customizable layout options that let you choose the configuration that works best for you.
All models with the redesigned interior now feature Google built-in compatibility that lets you easily control numerous vehicle functions with speech commands. You can use your voice to call or text your friends, play music, change the temperature in the cabin, and much more. Additional interior options include an available rear camera mirror and head-up display, both of which add to the standard interior displays to give you more viewable data. The head-up display makes it easy to keep track of your speed, navigation, and other info you need without taking your eyes off the road, while the rear camera mirror improves your rear visibility, especially while towing.
While it might not exactly be an interior option like these other things, we just had to mention that the tech improvements for the 2022 Silverado include GM's Super Cruise system. This is the first Chevy truck to offer Super Cruise, which gives you hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles of roads in the US and Canada. Combined with the rest of the impressive driver-assist safety features, this is the most advanced and innovative Silverado ever.
