History of the Ford F-150
Although the Ford F-150 itself goes back to 1975, the legacy of the F-Series of trucks actually dates back much further. The first truck to ever come from the Ford Motor Company was the Model TT, which was based on the Ford Model T and sold in 1917 as a chassis that farmers and others could outfit with a body and anything else they needed. In 1924, Ford started selling the Model TT with a factory-produced body, and a couple of years later, it was selling for just $325, making it an incredibly affordable and capable truck.
This was followed by the Ford Model AA, a truck based on the Model A, which went into production starting in 1927; the Model BB followed this in the early 1930s. Following World War II, Ford introduced its first F-Series truck – this was important because it was no longer based on a car model as the previous Ford trucks had been. With the introduction of the F-Series in 1948, Ford recognized that truck owners needed things that went beyond what could be done with a modified car chassis.
The first generation of F-Series trucks featured a different naming convention than the modern ones, with a half-ton F-1, three-quarter-ton F-2, full-ton F-3, and more. A redesign and launch of a second-generation in 1952 marked the introduction of the modern naming system: the Ford F-100 was the half-ton model, followed by the F-250, the one-ton F-350, and beyond. In 1975, during the sixth generation of the Ford F-Series, the F-150 was introduced as an option between the lighter F-100 and the heavier F-250, creating a new option for a wide range of truck owners.
In 1980, a seventh generation kicked off with a full redesign, and during these years, the popularity of the Ford F-150 surged – ultimately resulting in the F-100 being discontinued. In the 40+ years that have followed, the F-Series has held the top spot as the best selling vehicle in America every single year, with the F-150 as the single-most popular model in the lineup. Today, the F-150 is the gold standard of trucks in the American auto industry, and no other model can come close to the prestige, power, and reputation that it offers.
