The Ford Bronco Legacy

The return of the Ford Bronco has a lot of people excited for a wide range of reasons, not the least of which is the addition of a new chapter to one of America’s most iconic SUVs. While it might seem like SUVs appeared out of nowhere in the 1990s (when they boomed into popularity), the Bronco was first conceived in the early 1960s by the same man who had the idea for the Ford Mustang. It was originally developed and engineered as an off-road vehicle, in large part to compete with the Jeep of the time, and was one of the first vehicles to use the term “Sports Utility” – used in reference to the two-door version.

Looking at the original Bronco, we would see it as a compact SUV today, though that term was not in use when it (in many ways) invented the market. When it first launched in 1965, it had an I-6 engine, though a V8 was added the following year for more power. This first generation ran from the 1966 to 1977 model years, with a second-generation model released for 1978. By the time it rolled onto showroom floors, it had a lot more competition as other brands raced to try to keep up with what Ford was doing.

The second-generation Ford Bronco featured two different powerful V8 engines to choose from, with a 3-speed automatic as well as 4-speed manual and automatic transmissions available. Since this model utilized the same platform as the Ford F-Series trucks, it became larger than the first generation and was a full-size SUV. Second-generation models were only available for 1978 and 1979, but during those two years, it was very popular.

All-New 2021 Ford Bronco

After being away for more than two decades, the Bronco is back with an all-new 2021 model that kicks off the sixth generation for this amazing vehicle. With the new generation, Ford has gone back to the Bronco’s roots and designed it as the ultimate off-road vehicle. You can certainly enjoy everything the Ford Bronco has to offer while getting around town or on a road trip, but to fully appreciate it, you really need to feel it on the trail. Some of the amazing features you can find on the 2021 Ford Bronco include:

  • Up to seven GOAT Modes available, including Eco, Slippery, Sand, and Rock Crawl
  • Best-in-class available break-over angle: up to 29 degrees
  • Available departure angle up to 37.2 degrees – up to 33.5 inches of water fording
  • Available 17-inch wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires
  • Available position-sensitive Bilstein shock absorbers
  • Available Trail Control – cruise control for when you are off-road
  • Removable roof and doors – keep your side mirrors even with the doors off

A third-generation Bronco was released for the 1980 model year, along with a new generation of the F-Series trucks at that time, and remained a full-size SUV. An I-6 engine was once again available for the third generation, though several different V8 engines were also offered during its run from 1980 to 1986. During this time, a smaller version was also made available, called the Ford Bronco II, to offer something for people not interested in a full-size model.

The fourth-generation Ford Bronco was released for 1987 and ran through the 1991 model year, while the fifth-generation model came out for 1992. Although the Ford Bronco had been very popular for more than 25 years, sales had begun to decline in the early 1990s due to increased competition in the SUV market. Ford discontinued the Bronco in 1996 due to these decreased sales, replacing it with the Expedition to meet the changing demands of customers. For the last 25 years, that was the end of the story for the Bronco, but Ford has finally brought this legendary model back to life.
